Course Summary

RWJBarnabas Health recently completed a multi-year, multi-phased 13,000 sf renovation/expansion of an inpatient Behavioral Health Eating Disorder Unit (EDU) located on the 1st floor West Wing at the Somerset campus. The completed EDU adds voluntary Behavioral Health beds for a total complement mix of semi-private and private psychiatric beds; including 10 adult beds and 10 adolescent beds. The units are separated and secured, but share several centrally located support spaces. 

  • Participants will learn about design drivers, program development and compliance with the current FGI Guidelines and building codes associated with this unique program.  
  • Participates will gain an understanding of the challenges and opportunities to renovate in phases while minimizing disruption to the adjoining areas during construction. 
  • Participants will learn about integrated design features such as lighting capable to mimic circadian rhythms, finishes and materials selected for safety, durability and aesthetics in order to provide a calming environment.
  • Participants will learn about integrated security / safety features
