5:40pm | KSS Architects: Community Driven Design

Overview
Connections to the communities in which we live and work are essential to our well-being. However, the idea of community is not a fixed concept – different kinds of communities shape our world, and as Architects and designers, it our responsibility to recognize and engage these communities in meaningful dialogue focused on design. In this dialogue, we seek out how good design choices can elevate the communities that we serve. Through three case study projects, this course will illustrate how this kind of rigorous engagement can better serve the public directly and how design can respond to community.

Learning Objectives:

  • Develop an understanding of how a process of community engagement at the local level can inform design choices as they relate to K-12 School design. Explore how encouraging users to celebrate learning while supporting a schools mission to prepare students for the future and impart core values of respect and responsibility benefits users and the neighborhood at large.

  • Recognize the unique needs of the communities surrounding special education by understanding the development of new models that rise to the challenge of providing services to the increasing population of adults with autism spectrum disorder. Show how an integrated approach to community, service, research, and training programs serves as a groundbreaking model integrated into a larger Campus community.

  • The growth of e-commerce has highlighted a need for viable solutions to last-mile customer fulfillment, redefining the role of industrial development. Develop and appreciation for how a design response that the acknowledges the changing industrial landscape can transcend any one scale to support New York City’s prosperity and serve the entire urban system, or macro-community and become an economic driver at the local level.

This course has been approved for 1 AIA HSW CEU.
